Do you remember the first time you watched Jurassic Park?
I do. It was just yesterday.
And guess what? I was captivated—not just by Spielberg's trademark thrills, the dinosaurs, or their (dramatized) intelligence, but by a thought that's been with me for years.
What differs humans from the other living beings?
The dogs, the monkeys, and yes, even the dinosaurs, don't seem to lack much to give us a run for our money.
To create a civilization, all they need is two abilities: communication and creativity.
And we forget to be grateful about these two superpowers.
But mind you, they can be harnessed to increase your chances of getting lucky in life.
Understanding luck
Just like dinosaurs, luck is unpredictable.
So how do we tackle unpredictable animals?
We never go to their nest. We lure them to us.
Attract them to our strongest position to boost our chances of success.
Do the same with luck—attract instead of chasing it.
Luck surface area
This can be done by increasing the surface area where luck may happen.
The inventor of the model, Jason Roberts, believes you can increase your luck surface area by consistently taking action towards your passion and communicating it effectively.
Expanding your luck surface area
It involves two key levers:
Passionate Doing: Take consistent action towards your passion. The more you do what you're crazy about, the greater your chances of luck. This one is easier to crack if you love what you do. The hard part, for me at least, is…
Effective Telling: Sharing your passion / work effectively with others. The more people who understand and support your journey, the more your luck surface area expands.
Meet or speak to more strangers.
Share your journey, insights, and ideas on your socials or blog.
Send DMs to like-minded individuals and share your enthusiasm.
Remember the 23 y/o entrepreneur who cold-emailed Mark Cuban? Her business boomed after that shot in the dark and later she graced the TEDx stage to spill her cold-emailing strategies. Talk about effective telling!
Or go Harry Dry-crazy
Harry Dry, the wiz behind MarketingExamples, graduated from college and needed a job.
He learned Kanye West was hiring. But knew it was hard to get his attention.
So what did Harry do? He bought billboards in four cities to inform Kanye that “I’ve got ideas.”
And did he get a response? You bet! Read the whole story.
Wrapping it up
The very attributes that differentiate us from other animals—communication & creativity—are the same ones that can help us expand our luck surface area.
Think of luck as a shy, wild animal. Instead of chasing it, create the environment that lures it to you.
And that environment is best created by combining our passion with effective communication.
So, unleash and share it with the world.
